Formula for Calculating GWA

The formula to calculate GWA is:

  • Grade: The grade you received in each course
  • Credit Hours: The number of credit hours assigned to each course.
  • Sum (Grade × Credit Hours): The total sum of all the products of grades and their corresponding credit hours.
  • Sum Credit Hours: The total sum of all credit hours for the courses taken.

Step-by-Step Calculation

List Your Courses: Here is Start by listing all the courses you have taken within the semester or which one academic period you're evaluating.

Record Your Grades: You have to Write down the grade into input field which you received in each course. Ensure you use the appropriate grading scale (e.g., 4.0 scale, 1.0 to 5.0 scale) that your institution uses.

Determine Credit Hours: For each course, note the number of credit hours assigned. This information is usually available on your course syllabus or academic schedule.

Calculate Weighted Grades: Multiply the grade you received in each course by the number of credit hours for that course. This will give you the weighted grade for each course.

Sum Up the Weighted Grades: Add all the weighted grades together.

Sum Up the Credit Hours: Add all the credit hours for the courses you have taken.

Compute Your GWA: Divide the total weighted grades by the total credit hours.

Example Calculation

Let's say you took three courses with the following grades and credit hours:

  • Course 1: Grade = 3.0, Credit Hours = 3
  • Course 2: Grade = 1.5, Credit Hours = 4
  • Course 3: Grade = 2.0, Credit Hours = 2

Here’s how you calculate your GWA:

  • Course 1: Weighted Grade = 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
  • Course 2: Weighted Grade = 1.5 × 4 = 6.0
  • Course 3: Weighted Grade = 2.0 × 2 = 4.0
    • Total Weighted Grades = 9.0 + 6.0 + 4.0 = 19.0
    • Total Credit Hours = 3 + 4 + 2 = 9
